Cyrano de Bergerac opens on Broadway

The revival of the Broadway show Cyrano de Bergerac opens today November 1, 2007 on Broadway after being in previews since October 12. The show which stars Kevin Kline, Daniel Sunjata and Jennifer Garner will be running at the Richard Rodgers Theatre for a ten-week limited engagement through December 23rd.

According to press notes, Cyrano de Bergerac, concerns “the soulful poet/philosopher and brilliant swordsman Cyrano (Kline), a cadet in the French Army, [who] falls for the beautiful, strong-willed Roxane (Garner), but is too ashamed of his large nose to tell her. Instead, when he learns that she loves the handsome Christian de Neuvillette (Sunjata), his dim-witted comrade, he pens poetry and love letters to Roxane on Christian’s behalf. After many years, the truth is revealed. Will love or beauty conquer all?”

The rest of the cast includes Nance Williamson, Piter Marek, Daniel Stewart Sherman, Keith Eric Chappelle, Baylen Thomas, Thomas Schall, Davis Duffield, Alexander Sovronsky, Lucas Papaelias, Fred Rose, Stephen Balantzain, Amefika El-Amin, Kate Guyton and Leenya Rideout

The creative team includes Donald Holder on lighting design, Tom Pye on scenic design, Gregory Gale on costume design and sound design by David Van Tiegham.

Most people are familiar with the famous film version of the movie “Roxanne”, which stared Steve Martin and Darryl Hannah. There was also a 1950 version starting Ferrer for which he won an Academy Award and a 1990 French-language version starring Gerard Depardiu.
